Ten Reasons Why I Love Running

– I haven’t done a running post in a little while even though that’s what I’ve mostly been doing of late. The change from summer to autumn is upon us and it’s my favourite time of year for running.

The cooler temperatures are perfect for training. The mornings & evenings are still, for the time being at least, light enough for a pre / post-work run and the weather is still pretty decent.

So, if you’re thinking about starting up running or just getting back into it after a summer of excess, here are my top ten reasons why I love running.

1. It’s Cheap!
No gym membership required. All you need is a half decent pair of trainers, t-shirt & shorts and the open road. No 12 month commitment required. Sure, if you come to love running then you can invest in the fancy kit.

2. Great for losing weight.
Running is fantastic for losing weight. You burn calories when you run, even more so when you start doing High Intensity Interval Training or Fartlek whilst running. The more calories you burn, the more weight you lose.

3. Healthier Heart. 
Yes, you’ll lose weight by burning more calories but increase your heart rate and get into that cardio zone and you’ll doing much more. You’ll be conditioning your heart, making it healthier and stronger.

4. Live Longer.
Carrying around less weight and having a stronger healthier heart means you live longer. Running approximately two hours a week can increase your life span by up to six years.

5. Be Happy.
This is a big plus for me. Having suffered from depression all my life running is amazing at lifting moods and making you happier. It’s not just the satisfaction of completing a run or knowing your getting healthier. Exercise, especially running, releases Endorphins into the body. Endorphins = Happy.

6. Reduces Stress.
Running reduces stress, wether it’s due to focusing on issues during that clear your head or the Alpha waves in the brain that occur as a result of running I don’t know. All I do know is that I feel a damn sight better after a 5km than before.

7. Increased Self-Esteem.
Better body, stronger heart and a happier mood are all going to mean one thing. An improved and increased self-esteem. And so you should, getting of your arse and running any distance deserves a pat-on-the-back. Good for you!

8. You Get Denser.
Bone density that is. Regular running has been proven to increase bone density and strengthen joints. Meaning stronger legs.

9. Get Sharper.
Aerobic exercise is showing to lower risks of dementia and cognitive impairment. A study at the Mayo clinic showed exercise is crucial at preserving, and even enhancing, brain function as we age.

10. Sleep Better.
After all that running your body will need some rest but it’s not just that. Days that people who suffer from sleep deprivation fall sleep faster and stay asleep longer.
